Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Charles Spurgeon Gardner Papers comprises 1 linear foot and totals 66 folders. The inclusive dates for the collection are 1899 to 1949, although the bulk of the items are undated. The collection consists mainly of addresses, sermon manuscripts, and classroom lectures that Gardner created during the course of his career. It also contains newspaper clippings regarding Gardner's writings and a few personal items that belonged to him. Additionally it contains various tributes to him written after his death, apparently collected by his daughter, Claudia Gardner. Claudia Gardner donated her father's papers to The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Gardner wrote an influential book entitled "Christian Sociology" that was published in 1912.
Biographical Note
Charles Spurgeon Gardner was born in Gibson County, Tennessee on February 28, 1859. He served on the faculty of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as a professor of homiletics and sociology from 1907 to 1929, and he served as professor emeritus for the seminary from 1929 to 1948. He received his education from the University of Richmond, Union University, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to becoming a professor at Southern Seminary, Gardner served as the pastor of various churches in Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia. Gardner authored two major books, The Ethics of Jesus and Social Progress and Psychology and Preaching. Following his retirement from the seminary, Gardner moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he remained until his death on April 1, 1948.
