Historical Note: Thomas Peter Smith was born to (George) Savage Smith and Elizabeth Cuttino Smith in 1814. Thomas Peter Smith worked in South Carolina as a Factor and Commission Merchant. He married Theodora Elizabeth Townsend on December 20, 1838. The couple had 12 children (Thomas Cuttino, Emma Julia, Daniel Townsend, Basil Manly, Susan Edith, Mary Caroline, Thomas Cuttino, Susan Edith, Benjamin Pressley, Amyrinthia Jessica, Elizabeth Florence, and Anna Maude).  In 1839, he began working with the firm of Joseph Lawton and Company, later to be renamed Nayler, Smith and Company. Thomas Peter Smith was a deacon of First Baptist Church Charleston, South Carolina. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1868-1897 and was a member of the committee responsible for the decision to relocate the seminary to Louisville, Kentucky in 1877.
