Historical Note: Charles Spurgeon Gardner was born in Gibson County, Tennessee on February 28, 1859. He served on the faculty of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as a professor of homiletics and sociology from 1907 to 1929, and he served as professor emeritus for the seminary from 1929 to 1948. He received his education from the University of Richmond, Union University, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to becoming a professor at Southern Seminary, Gardner served as the pastor of various churches in Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia. Gardner authored two major books, The Ethics of Jesus and Social Progress and Psychology and Preaching. Following his retirement from the seminary, Gardner moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he remained until his death on April 1, 1948.
